Welcome to the Hazard Anticipation Program for Parents of Teen Drivers(HazAPP)!

This online course is designed to help parents teach their teens to anticipate potential hazards on the roadway. Learning to anticipate hazards is the most challenging and perhaps the most important skill we learn as drivers. But learning to do this isn’t easy and takes time.

Luckily, you are already an expert at anticipating and responding to hazards on the roadway! However, because experienced drivers do this with very little effort, parents sometimes have difficulty teaching their teen this higher-order skill. This program is designed to help you better teach your teen what you already know about this important driving skill.

The course has six modules for you to complete one at a time. You will complete the modules in order. Each module follows the same order:

1. Watch a hazard scenario unfold on the screen.
2. Tell us how you would talk your teen through this hazard as if you were instructing them while driving on real roads.
3. Answer a multiple choice question about what you think is the key event that triggered the hazard.
4. Rewatch the scenario unfold with two examples of how to teach your teen to “read the clues” in the roadway environment that indicate a hazard may be present before it becomes critical.
5. Read an example of how you can incorporate elements of motivational interviewing techniques to teach your teen about hazard after they have passed.

Be sure to track your progress by clicking the green “mark as complete” button before advancing to the next page within the module. This will make it easy to pick up where you left off if you are not able to complete the program in a single sitting.

After completing the course, you will provide instruction to your teen while watching an additional set of new hazard videos. We encourage you to try these techniques with your teen in your future driving lessons!
